Project Information
At a kickoff workshop held in March 2010, the project team listened to public concerns regarding high traffic volumes and speeding on residential streets throughout the area. Similar concerns were also expressed to the project team at the citizen focus group meetings and from community comment sheets provided at the workshop. The project team also revealed a short presentation to introduce the project and matters that would be addressed at future public workshops.
Based on what was heard in March, the project team conducted an in-depth examination of traffic volume, movement and speed through the area. The project team will use those findings to continue to work with neighborhood residents in developing traffic solutions for the area. In response to the neighborhood concerns, the project team then tested a potential traffic calming measure at the intersection of Wyoming Avenue and Whittier Street by installing a traffic control “island” to prevent through traffic on Wyoming Avenue. As expected, this test solution significantly reduced the amount of traffic using Wyoming Avenue and promoted residential traffic only. Traffic volumes were counted again after installation of the traffic island. To review before and after traffic count data for the project area, refer to the Wyo/Park Traffic Count document.
On September 23, 2010, the project team hosted a second public workshop to discuss potential alternatives for street design, sidewalks and parking placement in the neighborhood. Attendees viewed another presentation, participated in a tabletop exercise where they viewed different design options, discussed pros and cons of each option, and provided feedback on their preferred option or combination of options.
In February 2011, a third public workshop was held to review refined street alignments and intersection configurations for the Wyoming-Park project area, to discuss project schedule and to consider potential streetscape enhancements such as lighting, landscaping, etc. Neighborhood residents expressed strong support for the design and for starting construction in the summer of 2011. To review the presentation seen at this workshop, refer to the February 2011 presentation.
